Retired Person of Independent Means
The retired person of independent means category is for retired persons who qualify and who wish to live in the United Kingdom.
How do I qualify for this type of visa/permit?
- You must be at least 60 years old.
- You must have under your control and disposable in the United Kingdom an income of your own of not less than £25,000 per annum.
- You must be able and willing to maintain and accommodate yourself and any dependents indefinitely in the United Kingdom from your own resources with no assistance from any other person and without taking employment and without having recourse to public funds.
- You must demonstrate a close connection with the United Kingdom.
- You intend to make the United Kingdom your main home.
How do I apply and do I need entry-clearance?
You will need to apply at the British High Commission for entry-clearance as a retired person of independent means. Normally a decision will be taken on this application by the BHC without referral to the Home Office in the UK. Breytenbachs will be able to assist you with your application.
Some rules and restrictions on a retired person of independent means
- You may apply for your spouse/unmarried partner and children under 18 to accompany or join you in the UK. Your spouse does not need to be 60 years old. You are not allowed to take employment of any type in the United Kingdom. Neither is your spouse.
- The required income of not less than £25,000 per annum must be investment income and not earned income.
- You must demonstrate a close connection with the UK e.g. the presence of close relatives living in the UK.
- If you are successful with your application you will obtain permission to stay for
5 years in the United Kingdom.
Does this visa lead to indefinite leave to remain?
Yes, if you obtain permission to stay in the UK on this basis for 5 years as a retired person of independent means, you can apply at the end of this period for ILR.
